While summers are a lot about fun, beaches, holidays and cool ice creams, it can also get tiring due to the long and hot days. The scorching temperature and humidity, not only affects our health but also harms our skin. Although dealing with sweat and fatigue is not so easy, we can definitely take care of our skin in a better way.

Due to the heat and harsh rays of the sun, our delicate facial skin tends to become more dry, dull and dehydrated. Pigmentation, tanning, rashes and infections are other skin problems encountered during summer. To keep this in check, some easily made face masks can come in very handy. These DIY facial masks ensure that our skin is efficiently cooled and stays amply nourished in the hot weather. Additionally, these homemade cooling face masks will come to your rescue, when you want to pamper yourself indoors or want to naturally calm and hydrate your skin after a day out from the sun.

1. Cucumber and Aloe Vera Face Mask

Cucumbers are widely available and used during summer. This economical vegetable has a good amount of water content and is rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients. Cucumbers are also non-irritating and exhibit cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. This is the reason why cucumber is used as a key ingredient in a number of skincare products. Add naturally moisturizing gel obtained from aloe vera and you can whip up a quick face mask to help soothe and refresh your skin within minutes.

 

How to Make it

To make a refreshing face mask from cucumber and aloe, take half unpeeled cucumber and blend it in a mixer. You will get a watery paste like consistency. To this, add 2 spoons of aloe vera gel. Mix these well. Gently apply and massage this mask on your face and neck area. Let it sit on your skin for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cool water.

If you have dry or normal skin, then this hydrating mask will prove particularly useful for you.

2. Yoghurt/Curd and Honey Face Mask

Though yoghurt and curd differ slightly, it is one of the staple dairy products in many households. While both yoghurt and curd help better digestion and offer many other health benefits to a person who consumes it regularly, its advantages do not end here. It works further by bettering your skin too. Yoghurt/curd benefits the skin by acting as a gentle exfoliator and also nourishing, tightening and firming the skin. Mix it with an anti-microbial and moisturizing ingredient like honey and you get a face mask that is cooling, gently exfoliating and perfectly moisturizing for the hot weather.

 

How to Make it

To make this very simple yoghurt and honey face mask, mix 3 teaspoon of plain and unsweetened yoghurt (or curd) with 1 teaspoon of raw honey. Blend it well. Apply this mixture on your face and then leave it on your skin for about 20 minutes. Wash it off with cool water and pat dry with a clean cloth.

This face pack works really well for people with normal and dry skin type. 

3. Tomato and Honey Face mask

If there is one food item that is essential in almost every kitchen, then it is the bright red tomato. When used for culinary preparations, tomatoes can flavor up nearly every dish. Likewise, when used on skin, they can help lessen blemishes, get rid of excess oil, reduce sunburns, tighten pores and also stimulate collagen production. Combine it with a natural humectant like honey and the face pack works wonderfully well in restoring the skin's natural moisture and giving a healthy glow to it.


How to Make it

Tomato and honey are the only two ingredients in making this very simple and rejuvenating face pack. To start with, take one medium sized ripe tomato. Cut it into a few pieces and mash it well. You can also use your mixer/blender to turn it into a paste. Add 2 teaspoons of raw honey to it and mix well. Massage this mixture on your face and neck area and let it dry. Rinse it off with cool water thereafter and pat dry.

This face mask can be applied by anyone. However, people with blemishes and skin tan should definitely give it a try. Soft and supple skin is another benefit of this face mask.

4. Watermelon and Yoghurt Face Mask

A cooling fruit that contains over 93% water and is also easily available during summer are watermelons. Refreshing and delicious to eat, watermelons in addition to being healthy, also offer great skin nourishment. The pulp of this big green fruit when applied topically, is known to intensely hydrate and calm the skin, protect it from sun damage and also reduce free radical damage, that is the cause of skin ageing. Combine it with another amazing ingredient like yoghurt and you get a face mask that is moisturising, will fight acne and give a naturally radiant glow to your skin.


How to Make it

To make this face mask, take 6-7 fleshy pieces of watermelon and blend it in your mixer/blender or mash it well. Turn it into a puree like consistency. Take this puree in a small bowl and add 1 spoon of plain, unflavored and unsweetened yoghurt to it. Mix well. Gently apply and massage this paste on your clean face and neck area and leave it on your skin for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with cool water. 

5. Mint, Turmeric and Honey Face Mask

Mint (also called 'pudina' in India) is one of the oldest and commonly used herbs in the culinary world. However, apart from using it to improve the taste of various preparations, mint is also popularly used in beauty products. Mint has strong antibacterial properties, mild astringent effects and is rich in antioxidants. Additionally, it has a wonderful cooling effect on the skin, which makes it an ideal cure to treat a number of skin problems during the hot weather. Grind it with an antiseptic spice like turmeric and add a dash of a honey to it and you get a face pack that is not only cooling but will also keep pimples and heat rashes away.

 

How to Make it

Whipping up a mint, turmeric and honey face pack is honestly pretty easy. All you need is few fresh and clean leaves of mint, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of raw honey. To begin with, grind mint leaves with turmeric in a small mixer/blender. Add a spoon of honey to this ground leafy mixture and blend it again. If needed, add few drops of water and turn it into a fine paste. Apply this paste on your clean face and neck and wait till it dries out. Thereafter, wash it off with cold water and pat dry.

This homemade all-natural face mask is quite cooling and helps soothe skin irritation. It will also give you a chance of clearing up your skin and make you feel all refreshed and clean. Make sure to use it twice or thrice a week, especially if you have acne-prone skin.

6. Papaya and Milk Face Mask

The bright yellow-orange pulp of a ripe papaya is known to offer several benefits to the health and skin. When used on skin, it helps tone, lighten and nourish it. Ripe papaya is also known to help get rid of dullness, treat sunburns, fade blemishes and calm irritated skin. Add a bit of cool raw milk to it and you get a face mask that will not only hydrate your skin but will also make it visibly brighter and lighter within minutes.

 
How to Make it

If you have dry, dull or pigmented skin, then this papaya and milk face pack is perfectly suitable for you. To make this face mask, take 5-6 pieces of ripe papaya in a small bowl and mash it well. Add 2 teaspoons of raw milk or full cream milk to it. Mix it well to form a smooth paste. Gently apply and massage this paste on your entire face and neck area and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes before washing it off. Pat your skin dry with a soft and clean towel.

7. Sandalwood and Rose Water Face Mask

Since centuries, sandalwood (also called 'Chandan' in Hindi) is used as a natural beauty ingredient in many parts of the world. Its medicinal properties, amazing fragrance and ability to reduce skin blemishes, lessen tan and help delay fine lines and wrinkles, makes it a must have ingredient to get beautiful skin. Mix it with rose water and you get a face mask that will not only uplift your spirits with its sweet smell but will also do wonders on your dull looking skin.


 

How to Make it

To make the sandalwood and rose water face mask, take 2 teaspoon of sandalwood powder in a small bowl. To this, add few drops of rose water (add more if needed) and mix well. Ensure that this mixture turns into a thin paste and there are no lumps in it. Apply this face mask evenly all over your clean face (avoiding your eye area) and leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water and then pat dry for a clean and fresh skin.

This face mask is quite soothing and will help get rid of excess oil. It is also known to be quite effective in treating pimples and blemishes.

* The above given homemade face packs can be easily made within minutes. However, you need to apply them 2-3 times a week and on a regular basis to see visible results. 

* Ensure that you are not allergic to any natural ingredient before using it to make a face pack.
